What exactly is plagiarism?

Plagiarism is an offense that involves appropriating someone else's work.

In essays, internship reports, dissertations, theses... relying on existing ideas is essential, provided their origin is acknowledged.

Examples of plagiarism situations:

  • Copying a passage from a book or web page without using quotation marks and citing the source.
  • Translating a whole paragraph or quotation without citing its source.
  • Repeating an author's original idea in your own words without citing the source (paraphrasing).
  • Inserting images, videos or graphics from external sources without citing their origin.

Generative AIs such as ChatGPT are external sources: if you use them, you must cite them.

Even if I use my own words, I explicitly cite the author from whom I borrowed the idea.

Building your bibliography

I am precise in classifying authors with their references according to an identical model for each source.

The risk is real, the penalty too

If plagiarism is proven, it can lead to serious disciplinary action. Beyond the situation of the plagiarist, it is also the reputation of the entire institution that suffers.

Sanctions by the institution

In accordance with MBS's internal regulations, the disciplinary committee may rule on:

  • Cancellation of the event (0/20)
  • Suspended exclusion / temporary / permanent
  • Registration of the offense in the school record
  • Repeating / invalidation of the years of study / the diploma

Administrative sanctions by the Fraud Commission

  • Prohibition from exams for 5 years / permanently

  • Prohibition from enrollment in a higher education institution

Criminal sanctions according to the Intellectual Property Code

  • 300,000 euros fine
  • 3 years of imprisonment
  • 5 years of imprisonment for group plagiarism

Reminder

It is prohibited to reproduce all or part of a course available on Moodle. MBS teachers are the owners of their educational content. Copying slides, for example, and sharing them on any medium (electronic, web page, commercial site, photocopies, etc.) is prohibited.

Student sponsorship

To encourage you to submit authentic work, MBS offers you credits for analyzing your work by setting up Compilatio Studium sponsorship.
With this software, you can check that all your citations are properly referenced to avoid plagiarism.

  1. Create your Compilatio Studium account.
  2. Click on the "Add credits" button at the top right of the interface.
  3. Enter the code: W870DB1A4.
  4. Analyze your document.

Credits are valid for one year, i.e., until the end of the current academic year, and can be used for multiple documents.

You have 40 credits to use on the software, which corresponds to approximately 40 pages. You can either analyze a single document of approximately 10,000 words or analyze several smaller documents, for example, four documents of 2,500 words each.
